Muticulturalism

Task 2. Multiculturalism
- Based on the movie ”east is east."
Multiculturalism can cause a lot of conflicts, and even though we might not even think so, prejudice is still a huge problem among many cultures.  In the movie “East is East” we find a lot of different conflicts when it comes to multiculturalism.

In the movie “East is East” there are a lot of conflicts. The British Pakistani family Khan has to adjust to both the British and the Pakistani culture. Off course this affects the children the most, since they were both born and raised in Britain, but with a strict traditional Pakistani father, who expects all his children to also follow the Pakistani culture’s traditions.

The father, George Khan, has already decided that none of his children will marry Britons, even though their mother, George Khan’s wife is British. Off course this leads to a lot of frustration among the children. “Why can’t we marry Britons, when you are married to one yourself?”

It’s easy to blame the father, calling him an evil and a bad man, but the truth is that he’s only trying to do what he thinks is the best for his children. He wants his children to pass on the Pakistani culture. Off course he wants that! He grew up with the same traditions himself. It’s like different kinds of Christmas traditions – When we have grown up with some traditions, it simply become the best way of celebrating Christmas. And you don’t understand why someone prefers it differently than you do.  So when his children say they don’t want arranged marriages, again it causes frustration.

George starts to show signs of violent behavior. He wants his family to understand that what he decides is the best, and therefore he beats up his wife, when he doesn’t get her support. Luckily he realizes that this only leads to even more frustration and sorrow.

I think George suddenly realized that his culture wasn’t the ideal way of living anyway.
But this was a movie, and in real life many don’t ever understand it.  They see their own culture as the best, and that their culture is the center of the universe, and that the way everybody else live, is totally wrong.
